Illinois cracking down on doctors who push painkillers

Illinois authorities are attempting to crack down on doctors who use their medical licenses to supply patients with a constant supply of opioids and other addictive drugs. The initiative is in response to statistics that show opioid overdoses have increased 60 percent in recent years.

Chicago area couple arrested on drug charges

During a routine patrol of Southwest Highway on April 18, Evergreen Park police charged a Tinley Park couple with felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. The couple, a woman aged 30 and a man aged 25, appeared in Cook County Court in front of Judge Michael Kane for their bail hearing. The judge ordered the woman to be held without bail, but the man's bond was set at $20,000. Both were represented by a public defender.

Man detained for having Xanax pills without a prescription

An 18-year-old Illinois man was allegedly observed by police to be throwing prescription drugs into a sump pump pit, and at around 8 a.m. on April 24, police served a search warrant on the man at his home. They reportedly found 36 Xanax pills and no prescription and took him into custody.

Sean Penn's son facing drug charges following traffic stop

Illinois fans of Sean Penn may have heard that his 24-year-old son was taken into custody on drug possession charges on April 4. Hooper Penn and his 26-year-old girlfriend were reportedly driving in a 1992 Volvo when they were pulled over in Nebraska for suspected drug activity.

Police in a Chicago suburb stopped a vehicle on April 3 after the driver failed to obey a traffic light. An officer said that the driver and a passenger were making suspicious movements and that the driver was putting his hands in his pockets after exiting the vehicle. It was discovered that the 27-year-old male driver had heroin in his possession along with drug paraphernalia.

3 charged with selling synthetic marijuana

hree Illinois residents who were working as convenience store clerks have been accused of selling synthetic marijuana that had been laced with rat poison. Authorities said that the synthetic drug, also known as K2, could result in uncontrollable bleeding from the nose, eyes and gums. As of April 2, the K2 epidemic across the state had resulted in two deaths and caused approximately 60 others to become ill.

Methamphetamine charges for man found on side of road

A man was arrested in Illinois on March 14, 2018, and is now facing multiple drug charges in Pike County. The 43-year-old man was found parked along the shoulder of Illinois Route 96, just above Route 106. When a deputy sheriff from the county patrolled the area as part of normal rounds at around 5:00 p.m., he found the man seemingly unconscious and slumped over the driver's seat of his truck.
