ILLINOIS CRACKING DOWN ON DOCTORS WHO PUSH PAINKILLERS

Illinois authorities are attempting to crack down on doctors who use their medical licenses to supply patients with a constant supply of opioids and other addictive drugs. The initiative is in response to statistics that show opioid overdoses have increased 60 percent in recent years.

FORMER CITY COUNCIL MEMBER SENTENCED FOR DRUNK DRIVING

A former city council member in Illinois was sentenced for drunk driving on May 10. The sentencing was for an incident that occurred July 10, 2016. He resigned his position on the Joliet City Council a few months later.

ILLINOIS POLICE BUST 2 PEOPLE FOR TRAFFICKING METH

On May 2, Illinois authorities arrested a man and a woman for allegedly transporting methamphetamine into Quincy with the intent to sell it. The defendants are both residents of Missouri.

According to the West Central Illinois Task Force, officers were staking out an area near the 900 block of Jefferson Street when they saw a 2007 Dodge Nitro allegedly commit a traffic offense. When they pulled over the vehicle, a 37-year-old man exited the passenger side and attempted to run away. He was quickly apprehended. The driver, a 39-year-old woman, stayed at the scene.

POLICE ALLEGEDLY FIND 143.3 POUNDS OF COCAINE IN VEHICLE

On May 5, a 53-year-old man was taken into custody after state police in Illinois allegedly found more than 140 pounds of what is believed to be cocaine in his vehicle. Police estimated the value of the drugs to be more than $1 million.

The man was driving a rental truck on I-70 near St. Elmo in the afternoon when a trooper pulled him over for traffic violations. The cocaine was discovered at that time.

MAYOR OF ILLINOIS TOWN SAYS MEDICATION LED TO HIS DUI ARREST

The 44-year-old mayor of Romeoville issued a statement acknowledging his personal responsibility for choices that resulted in his arrest for DUI. In a statement to the media, he explained that his empty stomach and prescription medication caused his intoxication. Although he had not expected the side effects, he understood that he should not have been driving.

CHICAGO AREA COUPLE ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES

During a routine patrol of Southwest Highway on April 18, Evergreen Park police charged a Tinley Park couple with felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. The couple, a woman aged 30 and a man aged 25, appeared in Cook County Court in front of Judge Michael Kane for their bail hearing. The judge ordered the woman to be held without bail, but the man's bond was set at $20,000. Both were represented by a public defender.

MAN DETAINED FOR HAVING XANAX PILLS WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION

An 18-year-old Illinois man was allegedly observed by police to be throwing prescription drugs into a sump pump pit, and at around 8 a.m. on April 24, police served a search warrant on the man at his home. They reportedly found 36 Xanax pills and no prescription and took him into custody.
