illinoiss woman facing her sixth DUI charge

An illinoiss woman has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol for the sixth time after allegedly being involved in two car accidents on Feb. 6. The Montgomery resident was initially charged with a felony drunk driving count and cited for driving on a revoked driver's license, but officers with the Aurora Police Department added an obstruction charge when she allegedly refused to provide blood and urine samples after being transported to a nearby hospital.

According to reports, the first crash took place on Lake Street in Aurora at approximately 6:35 p.m. Police say that the woman fled the scene after striking two vehicles at a stop sign near West illinoiss Avenue. The woman's 2002 Mitsubishi Galant is then said to have struck a northbound pickup truck on South Broadway while attempting to make a left turn onto Hazel Avenue. No injuries were reported at either accident scene.

Officers arriving at the site of the second crash say that they took the woman into custody on suspicion of drunk driving after noticing clear signs of intoxication. The aggravated DUI charge the woman is facing carries a prison sentence of between 6 and 30 years with no possibility of probation. Initial police reports did not reveal what the woman's blood alcohol level may have been at the time of the two incidents.

Experienced criminal defense attorneys may urge prosecutors to consider leniency when their clients face severe drunk driving penalties and no bystanders have suffered injuries. While these cases are generally taken seriously, prosecutors may consider treatment options rather than lengthy prison sentences when DUI suspects are clearly struggling with substance abuse problems.
