Seven people arrested in meth bust

Seven illinoiss residents were taken into custody on Oct. 24 for alleged distribution of methamphetamine in Coles County, according to a press release issued by the Charleston Police Department. The arrests were the culmination of a two-month investigation conducted by Charleston police, the East Central illinoiss Task Force and the Coles County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities charged a 38-year-old Charleston man with armed violence, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, having an outstanding warrant for unlawful distribution of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance. Police also charged a 36-year-old Charleston man with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver and a 23-year-old Charleston man with forgery and burglary.

Meanwhile, a 34-year-old Charleston woman was charged with possession of methamphetamine, obstruction of justice and having an outstanding warrant for failure to appear for driving with a suspended license, and drunk driving. A second Charleston woman, age 27, was also charged with having an outstanding warrant for failure to appear for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and burglary. Finally, a 29-year-old Villa Grove man was charged with having an outstanding warrant for possession of stolen property, and a 25-year-old Mattoon man was charged with having a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Individuals facing drug charges could be sentenced to harsh penalties, such as incarceration, heavy fines and the seizure of personal property. However, a criminal defense attorney could use multiple strategies to fight the allegations and get the charges reduced or dismissed. Possible defenses an attorney may employ include lack of possession, unwitting possession and police entrapment. If the evidence against a defendant is strong, legal counsel may advise negotiating a plea deal that reduces charges and penalties.
