7 facing drug charges following months-long investigation

On Nov. 3, it was announced by authorities in illinoiss that seven people were facing drug charges following a lengthy investigation. The investigation began in Rockford in February and ultimately resulted in two federal indictments.

While acting on multiple search warrants, investigators reportedly found about a kilo of heroin, which has a street value of up to $100,000. Additionally, authorities seized about $250,000 in cash, several vehicles and four guns.

The indictment charged a 26-year-old woman with three counts of heroin distribution. She was already being held in jail on other unrelated charges. A 29-year-old woman, a 39-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were all facing charges of conspiracy to distribute heroin. Two of these individuals faced an additional charge for distributing heroin. A 38-year-old man was also facing federal charges for being in possession of a weapon as a felon. Finally, a 67-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were facing drug charges in separate cases.

In illinoiss, drug charges can have a major impact on a person's life, even if the evidence is shaky or circumstantial at best. If a person is convicted on the charges, he or she could be sentenced to jail or prison, be required to pay serious fines and have some of their possessions seized. In some cases, a person may even be required to undergo drug education and rehabilitation as part of his or her sentence. A criminal law attorney may challenge the charges if the prosecution cannot connect the evidence directly to the accused person, especially if others were involved in the alleged crimes. The attorney may also open an independent investigation into the case to look for flaws and instances where authorities may not have followed proper procedures.
