Authorities recover pot from home, charges filed

A 29-year-old illinoiss man was taken into custody on May 2 after authorities recovered approximately a half pound of marijuana from the man's Kirkland home. Authorities said they believe that the man was selling the marijuana.

According to court records, DeKalb County Sheriff's officers obtained a search warrant for the home, which is located in the 33000 block of Hagan Drive. During the search of the home, officers reportedly seized the marijuana, vacuum-sealing equipment, digital scales and a baggie that had cocaine residue inside. Additionally, they reported that they also recovered a concentrated marijuana derivative called butane hash oil. The drugs were field tested by authorities during the search.

The man reportedly told the authorities that he purchased the marijuana to sell but only used the cocaine for recreational purposes. He was charged with possession of marijuana, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He had his first court hearing on May 3, where he showed up in a head bandage after claiming he was injured during the arrest. The charges violated the conditions of bond from a previous order of protection, so he remained in jail for a bond increase hearing.

Depending on the outcome of the case, a person who is facing multiple drug charges could be sentenced to years in prison, be required to pay heavy fines and be on probation once released. Because drug cases can be complex especially if the person is accused of being in possession of multiple drugs or has a prior criminal history, a criminal law attorney may assist with protecting the accused person's legal rights. Counsel might challenge the charges during the trial or negotiate with the prosecution for more lenient penalties.
