Police detain dozens for various offenses

On May 20, officials in Chicago announced that there had been a large number of gang members and people involved in drugs and weapons trafficking taken into custody. Police detained the individuals over two days as part of the city's effort to stop gun violence. Federal law enforcement assisted in the arrests.

A total of 40 people were taken into custody on charges related to trafficking along with almost 100 gang members. The Chicago Police Department has a "Strategic Subject List" of people who it believes are likely to be the victim or perpetrator of gun-related offenses, and 117 of the people they detained were on this list. In compiling the list, law enforcement considers factors such as previous contact with police and gang affiliation.

A spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department said that the sting found over $45,000 worth of narcotics. In addition, 26 illegal guns were seized.

Drug charges are taken seriously, and people who are facing them may have severe consequences if convicted even if it is their first offense. However, people should keep in mind that being charged does not mean that they are automatically guilty, and they may have several options available that they might want to pursue with a criminal defense attorney. One strategy could be to challenge the search that lead to the seizure of the drugs as being without probable cause. Criminal court dockets are often clogged, and thus another option that a defendant's attorney could consider could be to resolve the matter quickly through an agreement with the prosecutor that would entail a plea of guilty to a lesser offense in exchange for a less harsh penalty.
