An Illinois woman reportedly drove away with three children in her vehicle while a Will County sheriff’s deputy was giving her a ticket. The woman was allegedly drunk at the time and was caught in a parking lot nearby.
Law enforcement authorities reported that the incident happened on April 10 around 2 a.m. on Route 59 close to Renwick Road. The deputy alleged that he first saw the 40-year-old woman swerving and that she almost struck another car while making a U-turn.
After he pulled her over, the woman reportedly got out of her vehicle several times, and the officer said he kept had to tell her to get back in the car. She then allegedly drove away while the deputy was writing a ticket, stopping in a Walgreens parking lot. In the parking lot, deputies reportedly took the woman into custody after she allegedly attempted to struggle with them. The three children in the vehicle were picked up by relatives. The woman was taken to the Will County jail and booked in on multiple charges, including driving under the influence, child endangerment, fleeing the police, improper turning, disobeying a traffic device and squealing her tires. There is no report about her blood alcohol concentration or whether she was able to post bond.
People who are convicted of drunk driving may face more severe sanctions when there are children present in their cars. They thus may find it advisable to obtain the representation of an attorney who can in some cases work out an agreement with the prosecutor that would entail pleading guilty in exchange for a more lenient penalty.
