Drake Bell arrested for drunk driving in Los Angeles

Illinois TV fans might find it interesting that former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Los Angeles County on Dec. 21. Authorities allege the 29-year-old actor and musician was weaving in his lane and driving at an unsafe speed. According to Glendale police, the officers who pulled Bell over said he smelled like alcohol. He also allegedly failed a field sobriety test. He was taken into custody and released later the same day.

Bell got in hot water earlier this year when he tweeted that he planned to continue calling reality star and former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner by her former name, Bruce Jenner. He later apologized for the controversial statement and deleted the tweet, saying his comments had been "insensitive."

From 2004 until 2007, Bell starred in the hit Nickelodeon series "Drake & Josh." In recent years, he has voiced the role of Spider-Man on "Ultimate Spider-Man," an animated series airing on Disney XD. He has a concert tour of Mexico scheduled for early 2016. He made no immediate comment regarding his arrest.

People who are charged with drunk driving in Illinois could be fined, have their driving privileges revoked or be sentenced to jail. However, a criminal defense attorney may be able to protect a defendant's future by fighting the charges in court. One method of defense could be to dispute the results of any breath or field sobriety tests a defendant was subjected to. If a case is strong, it may be possible to negotiate with prosecutors an agreement that reduces the penalties if a defendant agrees to plead guilty.
