Men taken into custody after Illinois drug raid

On Aug. 20, police searched a home on 4th Avenue in Dixon and found $11,000 and about 100 grams of marijuana inside the residence. A 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were taken into custody after the raid that took place at about 6:30 that morning. They both face charges of possession of cannabis between 30 and 500 grams and intent to deliver between 30-500 grams of cannabis.

The raid of the home was a joint effort between the Illinois State Police Blackhawk Area Task Force and the Dixon Police Department Street Crimes Unit. It was part of a larger drug investigation, and authorities say that there may be more people taken into custody at a later time.

Individuals who are facing drug charges may incur severe penalties if convicted. A judge may impose a sentence that includes prison time, probation or a fine. However, an individual who is charged with a crime is assumed to be innocent until proven guilty. Therefore, it may be wise to talk to a criminal defense attorney regarding the charges. An attorney may be able to come up with several defenses that could result in the charges being dropped or reduced through a plea bargain.

For instance, it may be possible to argue that a defendant did not intend to sell or distribute any drugs that he or she possessed when taken into custody. It may also be possible to cast doubt upon any testimony provided by police or witnesses. Finally, an attorney may argue that an individual was entrapped or otherwise illegally compelled to possess, use or distribute an illegal substance against his or her will.
