Recently, the Chicago Tribune reported that the defense lawyer in a Highland Park murder case was dismissed from the case because of a potential conflict of interest. The attorney was also representing a witness in the murder case in another trial on an unrelated drug charge.
Prosecutors argued that the attorney’s relationship to the witness might enable him to access confidential information that could affect the case’s integrity and fair cross examination. The removal of the lawyer will delay the murder trial as the defendant will now have to secure another attorney to defend him.
Unfortunately, this is one of many examples of misconduct in our justice system by a lawyer who should probably know better. The last thing a client in an overwhelming criminal defense situation should have to worry about is their attorney being taken off the case.
