Police arrest Illinois man transporting meth in taxi

The Marion Police Department Narcotics Unit arrested a 36-year-old man based on observations made during a surveillance operation in the 1500 block of West DeYoung Street on June 5. After watching a taxi cab arrive at the house of the suspect, police reported seeing him load large bags into the vehicle's the trunk.

Illinois rapper facing marijuana possession charges

Celebrity Chicago rapper Chief Keef was arrested on June 12 in South Dakota, charged with possession of between two ounces and one half-pound of marijuana. He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. The arrest took place around 8:30 AM at the Sioux Falls airport, where Keef was scheduled to perform in a show. The Transportation Security Agency reportedly discovered four marijuana cigarettes and two THC edibles in the rapper's luggage as he flew out of the city.

Alleged gang members charged with gun and drug offenses

After a two-year investigation, it was reported on May 26 that several dozen members of a Chicago gang known as the South Side street gang or the Gangster Two-Six Nation street gang were taken into custody on multiple charges. The charges included drug and weapons trafficking charges.

Illinois jury convicts drug suspect in absentia

An Illinois jury convicted a former Aurora resident of unlawful delivery of illegal drugs on May 23 even though he was not present in the courtroom to hear the verdict read. Reports indicate that a Kane County judge issued a warrant for the 40-year-old man's arrest after he failed to appear for his trial on May 22. The man's sentencing hearing has been scheduled for June 6. He faces a custodial sentence of between nine and 40 years.

Bathroom break leads to drug charges in Illinois

The Illinois State Police says that an inopportune bathroom break in Champaign County on the afternoon of May 17 led to drug possession charges for two men. The 26-year-old and 27-year-old Tennessee residents were charged with marijuana possession and marijuana possession with the intent to distribute after about 5 pounds of the drug were allegedly recovered from their vehicle. They face up to 15 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

Penalties for weed possession in Illinois

Illinois residents may have heard about a drug ordinance passed by the Peoria City Council on May 9. It says that a person caught with 10 grams of marijuana or less would pay a $125 fine for a first offense. The fine would increase to $250 for a second offense and up to $750 for a fourth offense. That fine could be paid at City Hall in person or mailed there according to the city manager.

Police recover guns in home raid

Illinois residents may be interested to know that the St. Clair County Sheriff's Drug Tactical Unit has removed 43 guns in the first four months of 2017. This is the same number of guns that were removed in all of 2016. One case involved a man who was traveling to Colorado and returning with marijuana. Based on a tip, authorities went to the man's home and immediately smelled the drug when he opened the door.

Man sentenced to prison for marijuana charges

On April 18, it was reported that an Illinois man pleaded guilty to unlawful delivery of marijuana. The 28-year-old man was sentenced to four years in prison followed by two years of supervised probation. The man's brother, who was accused of being involved in the case, pleaded guilty to being in possession of marijuana and was sentenced to 48 months of probation.
