Former Knicks coach facing DUI charges

Illinois sports fans may be aware of a car crash in early June involving former New York Knicks head coach Derek Fisher. After the crash, he was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. As of early July, he faces two charges of DUI.

In the June incident, Fisher's 2015 Cadillac was approaching an interchange on U.S. Route 101 when he swerved into a guardrail on the right-hand side of the road. The vehicle flipped over, eventually resting on its hood. Neither the driver nor passenger suffered injuries in the crash. However, the former coach was formally charged with two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

DUI charges have the capacity to greatly affect a person's life. Not only can they lead to jail time and hefty fines, but they can also result in the revocation of driving privileges, which can prevent individuals from commuting to work and providing for a family. An individual who is facing DUI charges may choose to seek the help of a criminal defense lawyer.

A lawyer could help to prevent these types of setbacks by forming strong defenses against the charges. For example, if a person accused of DUI was pulled over without the appropriate burden of proof, any evidence collected during the stop could be invalidated. In such cases, the charges could be dropped entirely. If a conviction seems likely to occur, a lawyer may instead go for a plea deal to reduce the charges, which could also lead to a lighter sentence.
