Illinois rapper facing marijuana possession charges

Celebrity Chicago rapper Chief Keef was arrested on June 12 in South Dakota, charged with possession of between two ounces and one half-pound of marijuana. He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. The arrest took place around 8:30 AM at the Sioux Falls airport, where Keef was scheduled to perform in a show. The Transportation Security Agency reportedly discovered four marijuana cigarettes and two THC edibles in the rapper's luggage as he flew out of the city.

Keef's lawyers are addressing the matter and his representative has stated that they expect the drug charges to be handled in a timely fashion. This event marks the second time that Keef was arrested and the third time he has had a run-in with the law in 2017. In April, he missed an arraignment in Miami on charges of drug possession and driving under the influence and an arrest warrant was issued. Earlier in January, he was arrested with several members of his entourage and accused of assaulting and robbing his former producer. Keef is well-known for the song "I Don't Like" and other hits on the rap and hip-hop charts.

While the TSA's mandate focuses on aviation security and, therefore, detecting guns or explosives is their priority, people can face drug charges at the airport if a screener discovers or notices marijuana or other drugs. The TSA will generally involve local law enforcement, which could issue a ticket or make an arrest depending on local laws. People accused of possession of over 10 grams of marijuana, even for personal use, can face misdemeanor charges carrying potential penalties of up to a year in jail and a fine of $2,500. Additional drug charges can carry more serious consequences. Accordingly, people facing drug charges for marijuana possession or related offenses should speak with a criminal defense attorney about these charges and their options for protecting their liberty.
