Truck driver arrested for DUI in Illinois

A commercial truck driver was taken into custody for drunk driving in Illinois on March 29. The stop took place near Troy.

According to the Illinois State Police, authorities began receiving 911 calls regarding a tractor-trailer driving erratically on a Springfield highway around 2:30 p.m. The truck was reportedly traveling at approximately 70 mph and swerving into both southbound lanes of the highway. A state trooper was finally able to pull over the truck.

The driver, an Oklahoma resident, allegedly had a blood alcohol content level of 0.149, which is nearly for times the legal limit for commercial drivers in Illinois. Police records indicate his eyes were glassy, and there was an open container of whiskey in the cab of his truck. He was charged with two counts of driving under the influence and booked into the Madison Country Jail. He was also issued five driving citations. In addition to any criminal penalties, he faces a potential lifetime ban of his commercial driver's license.

As this incident proves, drivers convicted of drunk driving charges can face harsh consequences, including incarceration, fines and the loss of driving privileges. However, defendants do not have to face the legal process alone. With the help of a criminal defense attorney, it may be possible to fight the allegations and avoid conviction. For example, a defense attorney may choose to dispute the accuracy of any breathalyzer or field sobriety tests a defendant was subjected to, which could cause the charges to be dropped. In other circumstances, legal counsel may negotiate a plea deal that reduces charges and penalties.
