Illinois police to crack down on drunk driving over Thanksgiving

Road traffic accidents claim thousands of lives each year in Illinois and around the country, and crash data suggests that many of these deaths could be prevented if drivers and vehicle occupants acted more responsibly. Most of those killed in vehicle collisions each year do not fasten their safety belts, and drunk driving remains a persistent problem for law enforcement agencies across the nation. More Americans than usual travel during Thanksgiving, and several state and local agencies in Illinois will be stepping up their safety and enforcement efforts to cope with this surge in traffic levels.

Automobile accidents claimed 341 lives over the 2014 Thanksgiving weekend, and the Plainfield Police Department have announced that they are joining forces with a number of other local law enforcement agencies as well as the Illinois State Police to reduce the death toll during the upcoming holiday period. During the road safety initiative, officers will be focusing primarily on ticketing vehicle drivers and passengers who are not safely restrained and identifying motorists that may be impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Illinois law requires all vehicle occupants to fasten their safety belts and prohibits individuals with a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or higher from getting behind the wheel. During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Illinois police will step up their enforcement of these laws by running 'Click It, or Ticket" and 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaigns.

Criminal defense attorneys may study police reports extremely carefully when drunk driving charges are filed during safety campaigns or law enforcement crackdowns. Police officers are not permitted to pull vehicles over without good reason, but these constitutional boundaries may sometimes be crossed when they are expected to write numerous tickets or make several arrests during a short period.
