Man faces 2 felony counts for allegedDUI incident

A 68-year-old man was charged with DUI after a 3-car accident in Chicago on Sept. 13. The crash occurred in the Chatham neighborhood and injured seven people, including the accused driver. At a hearing on Sept. 15, a judge set the man's bond at $5 million.

The alleged drunk driving accident happened at around 6:30 p.m. while the accused man was driving an SUV on South Vincennes. Fire officials say that the man struck two other cars and pinned an 11-year-old girl to a porch. The girl was taken to Comer Children's Hospital where she was listed in critical condition. One person was seriously injured in the accident, one person was stabilized, and four other people were listed in good condition after visiting area hospitals.

Law enforcement officials charged the accused drunk driver with two counts of felony aggravated DUI and two counts of misdemeanor DUI. He was also charged for misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident, failure to keep in a lane, failure to reduce speed, driving on a sidewalk and driving left of center. The man's next court appearance was scheduled for Sept. 23.

People who have prior convictions for drunk driving on their record may face elevated charges if they are suspected of driving drunk again. The prosecution may also charge a person with felony drunk driving if the alleged DUI incident involved any deaths or serious injuries. Even if it is not advisable to plead innocent, a criminal defense attorney may be able to help the defendant to negotiate a plea deal for reduced charges.
