A patch to combat DWIs

Being intoxicated while operating a motor vehicle is behavior that can result in an accident that can cause serious injuries. Drunk driving is an issue in Illinois and the rest of the nation. To combat the problem of intoxicated drivers, a start-up company has developed an anti-DWI patch.

DermaTec, a company based in Albuquerque, has created the ONUSBlue patch. The patch works by detecting an individual's alcohol level through his or her sweat. According to a representative of the company, the patch is applied directly on the skin. The wearer of the patch will be made aware that he or she has consumed enough alcohol to impair their driving when the patch changes color.

The company plans to combine their resources with businesses that routinely sell alcoholic products, such as restaurants and bars, as well as other type of companies to make customized versions of the anti-DWI patch. One example that was provided was that a bar could provide a branded patch for a designated driver and develop a system for checking the color of the patch before the driver leaves the bar.

The company is currently focusing on obtaining the necessary funding to mass produce the patches and sell them to the general public. Although it has been the recipient of a number of grants, more funds are required.

Drunk driving is a crime that may be treated aggressively by prosecutors. A conviction can result in a variety of penalties for the driver, from steep fines to incarceration. As a result, people who are facing these types of charges may want to meet with a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible in order to begin to develop a strategy to combat them.
