5 facing drug charges in Illinois

Authorities in Macomb say that five local people were taken into custody on various drug charges on July 8. The individuals were apprehended as part of a warrant round-up, and authorities say that more people may be taken into custody. Specifically, three men ages 45, 48 and 51 were taken into custody on charges of being involved in a drug conspiracy.

A 32-year-old man was also apprehended by police during that same roundup. Those four individuals were being held on $30,000 cash bond. A 37-year-old woman was charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance as well as possession of up to 30 grams of cannabis. She was being held on $15,000 cash bail.

Anyone who is charged with possessing drugs or any other type of drug crime may wish to talk with a lawyer. An attorney might be able to help create a defense to the charges against an individual. For instance, it may be possible to argue that an individual was not in possession of a controlled substance but a legal substance that may have looked similar. Another defense may be to claim that an individual was forced to use, carry or sell a drug against his or her will.

If successful, a defendant may be able to avoid going to jail, spending time on probation or paying financial penalties. If a total acquittal is not possible, the most serious charges or penalties may be avoided through a plea deal. If an individual is acquitted or has charges dropped, it may be possible to ask that the charges be expunged and removed from the defendant's records.
