College football star charged with drunk driving

College football fans in Illinois might be familiar with Boston College wide receiver Troy Flutie. He is the nephew of Eagles legend and former Patriots, Bears, Chargers and Bills signal caller Doug Flutie, but he was suspended on May 23 after reports emerged that he had been cited for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Eagles coach Steve Addazio said in a press release that the 20-year-old standout could face additional sanctions when further details about the May 21 incident are revealed.

According to police reports, Flutie was taken into custody in the early morning hours of May 21 after his vehicle struck a curb in Natick. Flutie allegedly told officers that he had not been drinking and refused to submit to a breath test. However, the officers claim in court documents that Flutie's breath smelled strongly of alcohol and an open container of beer was visible in his vehicle. The officers added that Flutie seemed disorientated and unsure of where he was.

Police say that Flutie failed a number of field sobriety tests. He is scheduled to appear in Natick District Court on June 20. Flutie has been charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence, possessing an open container of alcohol while driving and being in possession of alcohol under the age of 21. His driver's license was also suspended for refusing to take a breath test.

A drunk driving conviction can have particularly severe consequences for those under the age of 21. Most colleges, employers and landlords run extensive background checks, and even minor criminal infractions can make life extremely difficult for young people. Experienced criminal defense attorneys will likely be aware of these challenges, and they may urge prosecutors to show leniency during plea discussions.
