Man Claims Chicago Officers Shot Him Unjustly, Files Lawsuits

4505661-480x720-1000-ffccccccWhite-3333-0.20.3-1.pngDo law enforcement officers always follow the law and do what is right? Unfortunately, the answer to this question is no. There are many officers out there who abuse their positions of power and use excessive force that goes beyond the call of duty. When this happens, people in the community can end up having their rights seriously violated.

According to a recent article in the Chicago Tribune, one man in Chicago is claiming that this happened to him. He has filed a federal lawsuit, in which he accuses two Chicago police officers of shooting him without having sufficient legal cause to do so.

The Chicago Tribune article describes the plaintiff as a 36-year-old father of two. The lawsuit alleges that the officers showed up to an outdoor gathering where the plaintiff and others were celebrating the life of a friend who had passed away. It is alleged that police showed up with three vehicles and that one of the officers fired a shot, which appeared to be a warning shot. As a result of the shot being fired, the plaintiff and others at the gathering fled from the scene.

The lawsuit claims that two officers chased the plaintiff and fired at least 10 shots at him from behind. They ended up shooting him in the back of his left arm and leg. The officers allegedly claimed that they mistook the plaintiff's cell phone for a gun. No weapons were found at the scene of the incident.

The Chicago Tribune article quoted one of the plaintiff's defense attorneys, who called the officers' story "preposterous." The lawyer noted that Cook County prosecutors refused to press felony charges against the plaintiff, despite insistence of law enforcement.
